Congratulations to Liverpool F.C. who won the Premier League yesterday with a decisive 5-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur. Their 20th top-flight title brought to mind a little known slice of area ski history in the form a manmade hill that was shutdown before it ever opened.
Enjoy the fascinating story of the Kirkby Ski Slope near Liverpool that was condemned before it ever opened to the public. Constructed out of garbage, without planning permission, over a water main and on land not belonging to the council, Kirkby Ski Slope was doomed from the get go.
The 150ft artificial ski slope was built back in 1973 and at a cost of £140,000 but was demolished before anyone had the chance to ski it. They were myriad issues with the Kirkby Ski Slope, not least of which it was essentially oriented backwards with the bottom running perilously close to the M57 (imagine losing control and sliding onto a highway).
“It’s never been skied on and it never will be. The people of Kirkby really have been lumbered with a heap of old rubbish.”
