Woodford, Vermont — In one of the strangest ski industry stories of the year, a grenade was discovered at a Vermont ski area.
WCAX reports that while cleaning up trash around Prospect Mountain’s parking lot last Friday, the managers of the ski area discovered a container with a hand grenade inside of it. The employees, who were probably not calm like a bomb, called the authorities. The Vermont State Police and the state’s bomb squad were called in and determined that it didn’t pose any risk to the public.
If you have any more information about the grenade, please contact the Vermont State Police in Shaftsbury at 802-442-5421.
Prospect Mountain’s history is pretty interesting. It was a lift-serviced downhill ski area from the late 1930s until the 1990-91 season. The 675-foot vertical drop ski area was served by three lifts (two T-Bars and a surface lift). From there, the alpine skiing portion of the mountain was shut down, while the cross-country ski trails remained open. In 2018, a non-profit group acquired the ski area and has continued to improve the mountain. It remains a popular spot for cross-country skiing, and uphill skiers are still allowed to climb up and shred the old downhill skiing trails.
