Overinflating a tubeless bike tire.
Overinflating a tubeless bike tire.

Putting tubeless tires on a bike for the first time can be a bit of a finicky process. You tape the rim, install the valve, begin to install the tire, pour in the sealant (if you’re not injecting), finish installing the tire, and finally (if you’re not injecting) seat the tire. Seating the tire is where things get the spookiest (in my experience).

Loud pops, a quick injection of air, and lots of bubbles always keep you on edge, and even when you’ve done it right it feels like you’ve done something wrong. Plus if you exceed the maximum pressure on the tire or there’s something wrong with the tire, you might be facing a nice loud explosion of liquid sealant, like this guy does.

Anytime you’re inflating your tire you should never go over the maximum pressure. A catastrophic failure like this can happen no matter how long ago you’ve installed the tire, so know the max pressure and don’t go over it. An explosion isn’t a guarantee, but you can certainly do some serious damage to your tire.
