Sunlight Mountain Resort is celebrating the next chapter of their evolution today, saying goodbye to the Segundo chairlift. As the old two-seater began its life on Aspen Mountain back in 1954, it exists today as the oldest operational ski lift in the state.
Segundo was moved to Sunlight in 1973, where it’s remained for over five decades. Both the Segundo and the Primo lifts are aiming to be replaced heading into the 2025/26 ski season. Segundo is set to be replaced with a triple chair lift while Primo will be replaced with a quad.
“The replacement of Primo and Segundo signifies a new era for our resort. We are excited about the increased capacity and efficiency these new lifts will bring, while also honoring the legacy of Segundo, a beloved fixture of our mountain for over 50 years.” – Sunlight Mountain Resort spokesperson.
To celebrate the lift and its history, Sunlight is hosting the first and only Segundo Day today, March 28, with festivities and special events throughout the day. While the Tercero and Primo lifts will be running on their usual 9am-4pm schedule, Segundo will offer rides until 6:30pm. Plus, live music will begin at 4pm with a giveaway for a free pair of skis or snowboard.
It’s not 100% clear if today marks the last day to ride the historic lift, though it’s certainly among the last. Sunlight is scheduled to close after April 6, with a closing day celebration to close out the season.
According to Colorado Public Radio, Primo was actually installed at Sunlight before Segundo, taking skiers and snowboarders to the top of the mountain since 1966. Segundo runs from the base of the mountain toward the middle.. Sunlight Mountain Resort has just three chairlifts, but it offers more than 730 acres of skiing and 75 total chairs.
