Maine’s Acadia National Park is moving to a fully cashless fee collection system starting on April 15, 2025. Mobile payments, credit cards, or debit cards will be accepted at park sales outlets for entrance fees.
Those who have to pay with cash can purchase a pass at from one of the nine local third-party vendors. Currently, cash sales represent less than 5% of all in person sales throughout the park. Rangers in Acadia spend up to eight and a half hours per day documenting, reporting and transferring cash receipts during the park’s peak season.
“Moving to a cashless system will reduce the amount of time park staff spend managing cash and increase their availability to collect fees, increasing the amount of fee revenue available to support critical projects and visitor services.” – NPS
Entrance fees continue to be a major source of revenue for park improvements, funding projects including the Bubbles Divide Trail repairs, comfort station repairs, hazard tree removal, and more.
