France has a bunch of top notch ski areas, from Val Thorens to Les Trois Vallées. But it would be pretty difficult to argue that Chamonix, situated in the shadow of Mont Blanc, is not the most iconic in the country. I’d argue that it’s one of the most iconic in Europe, if not the most iconic (likely battling Zermatt for the #1 spot).
So why is that? What makes the French area such an iconic destination? PeakRankings took a look at the European town, identifying what makes it so famous among so many incredible areas.
Chamonix is iconic, but it has its downsides like any ski area. One specifically pointed out by PeakRankings is that, despite the number of individual areas, the on-piste skiing in Chamonix is fairly limited compared to other major European destinations. Of course there’s still plenty of terrain to choose from.
