British Columbia—Yesterday, Kicking Horse became the latest ski resort to suffer a significant lift failure in a season full of them. Since then, the ski resort has been keeping guests updated regarding what they’ve discovered.
Last night, Kicking Horse Mountain Resort issued an updated statement, which tried to give more clarity regarding what happened. After the initial investigation, they believe the lift hanger broke after leaving the base terminal, resulting in the cabin falling one meter (a little over three feet). While this explanation is still vague, more details are likely to come. Luckily, out of the eight passengers, none of them suffered severe injuries. They had to rescue people via rope and helicopter evacuations, with this process taking hours. This situation resulted in the ski resort being closed for the majority of Monday.
As referenced above, Kicking Horse will be open on a limited basis for a bit with discounted tickets, as the upper mountain is only accessible from the lower mountain via the now-closed Gondola. The Catamount and Pioneer chairlifts, along with the Jelly Bean magic carpet, are scheduled to operate, but these only service a modest fraction of Kicking Horse’s skiable terrain.
