Avalanche in Kazakhstan.
Avalanche in Kazakhstan.

Footage of a large and intense avalanche was captured apparently at the Shymbulak ski resort in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The slide happened today, March 10. It’s not clear if anyone was fully buried or injured in the slide, but it does seem as though at least one person was partially caught.

Avalanche mitigation is handled differently depending on the country and the resort. It’s not clear exactly what triggered this slide. In the United States, most resorts work to mitigate avalanche risk in any open area, with any terrain that has an avalanche risk remaining closed until deemed safe.

While little information is available at this time on this specific slide, we’ll be sure to update on any further information as it’s released.
