Clarkston, Michigan — People tend to enjoy videos of rope drops on powder days. The most viral ones tend to come from Snowbird when Mineral Basin opens up. It’s fun, perhaps a little unnerving, when you’re there skiing in this experience, but when you’re watching from afar, it’s mesmerizing.
Well, in Michigan, there’s another type of rope drop. Pine Knob Ski Resort hosts night skiing every night of the week. In between 5:30 and 6 p.m. on weekends and holidays, they close the mountain and groom the slopes to freshen up conditions. At Pine Knob, they hold people next to their base lodge before the groomers finish their work, and then let people send it down to the lifts.
In the video below, a huge crowd is let go by patrol, leading to chaos on the slopes. The video is made better by Another One Bites The Dust playing in the background, with the best part of the song playing as skiers and riders try to snag the first chair. It’s clearly not always like this, but it’s obvious what they’re poking fun at.
Opened back in 1962, Pine Knob is one of the closest ski resorts to Detroit. It features 17 trails, 13 lifts, and a vertical drop of 302 feet. It’s situated right next to the Pine Knob Music Theatre, which has had its share of legendary shows over the years.
