The Farmers’ Almanac is forecasting a highly changeable winter across Canada in 2026-2027, with the potential for major swings between snow, rain, ice, wind and Arctic cold. The long-range outlook, updated August 21, describes the season with the theme “Snow, Sleet, and Surprises.”
Rather than a consistent coast-to-coast deep freeze, the Farmers’ Almanac expects frequent shifts in temperature and storm tracks. A strengthening El Niño could also influence the pattern, contributing to sharp regional differences across the country and shaping the ski and snowboard season ahead.
British Columbia
Coastal British Columbia is expected to have a generally wet and windy winter, with periods of heavy Pacific precipitation and occasional thaws. Vancouver and Victoria could see more rain than snow at lower elevations.
Interior British Columbia should have a much snowier pattern. Pacific storms moving into the mountains could produce periods of heavy snowfall and difficult travel conditions. Higher elevations may see repeated opportunities for significant snow.
Alberta, Saskatchewan And Manitoba
The Prairie Provinces could experience some of the most dramatic cold outbreaks of the winter. The Farmers’ Almanac is calling for Arctic air, strong winds, blowing snow and potential blizzard conditions.
Periods of milder weather may interrupt the cold, particularly in Alberta, where Chinook conditions can bring rapid temperature changes. January and February could bring some of the harshest cold outbreaks.
Ontario
Ontario is expected to see frequent snow along with lake-effect snow and icy conditions. Cold air moving across the Great Lakes could generate intense snow squalls, particularly in traditional snowbelt areas.
Southern Ontario could also see repeated transitions between snow, freezing rain and rain as temperatures hover near freezing.
Quebec And Labrador
Quebec and Labrador are expected to remain colder and snowier than many areas farther south. Major storms could produce significant snowfall, while coastal systems may bring strong winds and nor’easter-type conditions.
Southern Quebec could still experience occasional mixed precipitation and thaws, while northern areas are expected to remain more consistently wintry.
Atlantic Canada
New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland could face an active mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain. Coastal storms may produce rapidly changing conditions depending on their exact tracks.
Northern Canada
The territories and Arctic regions are expected to remain firmly in winter, with persistent cold and periodic Arctic outbreaks. These reservoirs of cold air could eventually push southward into central and eastern Canada.
El Niño Could Shape The Winter
The Farmers’ Almanac points to strengthening El Niño as an important factor in the 2026–2027 winter pattern. NOAA reported in August that there was a greater than 90 percent chance of a very strong El Niño during the Northern Hemisphere fall and winter.
Overall, the Farmers’ Almanac forecast suggests Canadians should prepare for a winter defined by contrasts rather than constant cold. Snowstorms, Arctic outbreaks, freezing rain and sudden thaws could all play a role depending on where you live.
