Two ice climbers were struck by an avalanche off Cannon Cliffs in New Hampshire’s Franconia State Park. The pair began their excursion at 8am Sunday with the objective of ice climbing the Black Dike route.

When the pair arrived at the base of the Black Dike route several hours later, they triggered the avalanche. One climber was caught and carried about 300 feet and became partially buried. New Hampshire Fish and Game reports he suffered injuries.

The other climber was hit by the avalanche but was able to self rescue and call 911. The climbers were able to make it back to the trail under their own powere where they were met by rescuers around 1:45pm. They were taken Lafayette Campground in Lincoln via ATVs and one climber was taken to the hospital.
