Legendary duo Mikaela Shiffrin and Breezy Johnson, born just under a year apart, won the first ever team combined race at the World Alpine Skiing Championships. It was Shiffrin’s second race since crashing back in November.
The team combined race replaces the individual combined, combining times of pairs made up of one downhill skier and one slalom skier who ski one run each to determine the winner. Breezy Johnson took the downhill, where she had the fourth fastest time, and Shiffrin took the slalom, where she had the third fastest time. Together their time was the fastest.
This marks Shiffrin’s 15th career world medal, a record-tying number, and eighth gold medal, a modern era record-breaking number. Shiffrin is likely to race again later this week at the world’s at Saturday’s slalom.
