Don't duck ropes.
Don't duck ropes.

The Bear Valley Ski Patrol at Bear Valley Mountain Resort in California shared an important message to their Instagram this weekend, explaining that it’s never cool to duck ropes. While the video itself is humorous and plays on current social media trends, the message is as serious as it could be. Don’t duck ropes, it’s for your own safety and for the safety of others.

Ducking a rope exposes you to many dangers, both beneath the snow and surface level. We take pride in placing each individual stick of bamboo boundary and tying each individual clove hitch on the rope. It’s all in a days work to keep you all safe and skiing longer! Do us a favor and stay in our rope boundaries.”

Roped boundaries exist for hazards both above and below the snow. They might be closing off an area with inadequate snow coverage, or an area of active avalanche hazard. By ducking ropes, you could be endangering people below you, working ski patrollers, yourself, and others. Ski patrollers like to ski. They don’t want to end the day for anyone on skis or snowboards, but they will pull your pass, or worse, if you duck ropes.
