Lebanon, New Hampshire — For those who tell you that they don’t want to get into skiing or riding because it’s too expensive, tell them about Storrs Hill.
This season, Storrs Hill in Lebanon, New Hampshire, is offering free skiing and riding for everybody during the days it operates its Poma lift. All guests need to do is grab a ticket at the lodge, and they’re good to go. This was made possible by the Jack and Dorothy Byrne Foundation, which is known for its charitable endeavorsthroughout the Dartmouth-Lake Sunapee region.
Last Friday night, Storrs Hill opened for the season. Storrs is open on Fridays from 5-9 pm, Saturdays from 11 am-9 pm, and Sundays from 11 am-5 pm. Storrs Hill also has its slopes open during holiday periods.
If you do end up visiting Storrs Hill, consider giving a donation, whether that just be through buying a snack or giving some money at the ticket office, so that this can become more than a one-time thing.
If you’re looking for rentals, Storrs Hill doesn’t have any on-site, but there are local shops like Omer and Bob’s and the Golf & Ski Warehouse.
Storrs Hill is among the most historic ski hills in not just New Hampshire and New England, but in the United States. The Lebanon Outing Club, which runs Storrs Hill, was founded in 1923 thanks to Erling Heistad and some local high school students. In 1925, the first ski jump was constructed at Storrs Hill, and ski jumping has remained a core tenant of the experience at the ski area.
Six years later, the first alpine trails were cut, and a rope tow was installed in 1935. Its Poma chairlift, which services the ski area today, opened back in the 1970s. Over the decades, the ski hill has become a pivotal learning location for skiers, snowboarders, and ski jumpers. Legendary ski racer Mikaela Shiffrin also trained there back when she lived in New England. Click here to read the full history of the ski hill.
