Skier injured in avalanche near Kicking Horse Ski Resort

A skier suffered multiple major injuries following an avalanche Saturday near Kicking Horse Resort in Golden, B.C.

Golden Search and Rescue received a report of an avalanche around 12:40pm on Saturday in an area directly adjacent to Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. One of the skiers involved was caught and carried but thankfully did not get fully buried:

“One member of the party went for approximately 500m ride over cliff bands and through small trees resulting in multiple major injuries but was able to deploy their airbag and remain on the surface.”

The injured skier was evacuated by helicopter to Kicking Horse Resort and transferred to B.C. Emergency Health Services.

Golden and District Search and Rescue Statement:

At approximately 12:40 GADSAR got report of an avalanche on Terminator 2.5 directly adjacent to Kicking Horse Mountain Resort.

A party triggered a size 2.5 avalanche from a notoriously complex piece of terrain immediately outside the boundary. One member of the party went for approximately 500m ride over cliff bands and through small trees resulting in multiple major injuries but was able to deploy their airbag and remain on the surface.

1 GADSAR member responded from the resort while 2 other staged at the airport in Golden. The 2 member with the help of Alpine Helicopters inserted into the scene via heli sling, packaged and transported the injured subject back to Kicking Horse and transferred to BC Emergency Health Services for further care.
