Weighing between 17 and 40 pounds and standing just 1.5 feet tall, wolverines might come in a small package but they are renown for the ferocity, powerful jaws (strong enough to crush bones) and sharp claws which they can use to hunt animals far larger than themselves. While wolverines primarily prey on smaller mammals like snowshoe hares, marmots, and ground squirrels, they are capable of taking down animals as large as moose and elk.
Wolverines occupy most of the world’s Arctic tundra and possess incredible agility allowing them to maneuver lightning fast when they are challenged to a combat situation in the desolate reaches of the far north. Wolverines ability to evade attacks from much larger opponents when threatened is simply uncanny. Such was the case for this lone wolverine that successfully fended off two attacking wolves in Far Eastern Russia.
Despite being outnumbered by larger opponents, the wolverine managed to dart between its flanking attackers and lunge its own flurry of counterattacks and the wolves quickly decided pursuing it was not worth the trouble and gave up. It is no wonder wolverines a have a reputation for their outsized voracity, fearlessness and cunning.
