Ski season in the West has officially begun with the opening of Colorado’s Wolf Creek Ski Area on Tuesday. While opening dates for other many other ski resorts remain uncertain, a few incoming storms could really help push things along. We’ve known about a late-October storm system for a bit, but Meteorologist Chris Tomer is forecasting a new one bringing more snow towards the Rocky Mountains into the beginning of November.

Chris Tomer has been in mountain weather meteorology for around 20 years, providing weather related information for expeditions around the entire world. He’s consulted for expeditions on all 14 of the world’s 8,000 meter peaks, including Mount Everest. His love for the mountains shines through in his Mountain Weather Updates, supplying detailed snow forecasts for recreators across North America.

A windy storm system is set to hit the Rockies tonight and into tomorrow, mostly focused on Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado. Snow from this storm system is likely to be minor and more northern, bringing maybe an inch to Idaho and Wyoming. The late-October storm system, combined with most of the 10/31 into 11/1 storm system, will bring a lot more snow, including potentially more than a foot in some parts of Colorado & Wyoming. Meanwhile parts of the Pacific Northwest could see well over two feet, with Mount Bachelor forecasted at a monstrous 32 inches.
