Kevin Rolland underwater skiing.

Professional skier Kevin Rolland filmed a rather unique bit for his short ski film Top to Bottom in which, after skiing a fairly typical run down the mountains of the alps, he found himself sinking to the bottom of the ocean. His journey comes to an end on the surface of a wrecked ship, where he stands and observes the fish and sharks swimming around him.

The clip feels like it could be AI generated or otherwise faked, but Rolland actually went to the bottom of the ocean wearing his ski gear to get the shot. Underwater filmmaker Mathias Lopez helped to make this underwater bit happen.

While this is a cool clip, it’s important to understand that scuba diving needs to be taken seriously. In the United States, 46 people died skiing or snowboarding through the 2022/24 ski season, for a death rate of about 0.7 skiers/snowboarders per million. Around 80 commercial divers lose their lives in the United States & Canada every year, for a death rate of around 3.4-4.2 deaths per 100,000 divers.

This shipwreck appears to be that of the Sea Trader off of Nassau, Bahamas. A 250-foot oil tanker, the Sea Trader was intentionally sunk by Stuart Cove’s Dive Bahamas to create an artificial reef for wreck dive training. When boats are purposefully sunk for diving, any hazardous materials are removed to create a safe environment and safe dive site.
