Japan — In September 2022, Typhoon 14 wreaked havoc on the Gokase Highland Ski and Snowboard Resort. This typhoon severely damaged the access road to the ski resort and the ski resort management road, resulting in the mountain’s closure for two straight seasons.

The Asahi Shimbun reports that Gokase Highland Ski and Snowboard Resort is preparing to open for the first time since 2022. Road repairs are expected to be completed by the end of October.

Opened in 1990, the southernmost ski resort in Japan exists in a warmer climate than other Japanese ski destinations. Situated on Mount Mukozakayama, the resort features five trails, three lifts, and a vertical drop of 613.5 feet.

“The snow in Gokase is soft and good for skiing. We want people to enjoy it again,” said Mayor Yukihiro Kosako.

Their reopening date is anticipated to be December 20th, 2024. Gokase Highland will try to remain open through the end of March 2025.
