Alta, Utah — While it hasn’t been home to the biggest offseason projects in Utah this summer and fall, Alta has still been busy. Last week, THE Alta Ski Area announced what’s new for the 2024-25 season.

The biggest upgrade for this upcoming season is suited toward beginners. Their old magic carpet was replaced with two new Sunkid-covered conveyor lifts between the Albion and Snowpine lodges. The Big and Little Griz are covered conveyors that will require less snowmaking to operate. Big Griz will be for beginners and provide easier access between Snowpine, the Transfer Tow, and the Sunnyside lift. Little Griz is exclusively for Alf Engen Ski School lessons. Considering snow is frequently on the menu at Alta, covering these two conveyor lifts is a wise decision.

Two of Alta’s most popular traverses have also been improved. The Ballroom Traverse, which leads to some wide open spaces on Mt. Baldy, now has a smoother entrance from the top of Upper Main Street. The High Traverse has been widened from Jake’s to the pass. This was the final portion of the two-year process to improve the High Traverse.

Ski Patrollers are also seeing a significant upgrade. The decades-old shack near the top terminal of the Sugarloaf chairlift has been replaced with a new building.

Revegetation and reforestation work also occurred. During June and July, the Alta Environmental Center (ACE) team planted 12,000 native plant seedlings across the mountain. One of the points of emphasis was Nina’s, which was regraded in 2021. For reforestation, they harvested trees from their trails and then replanted them elsewhere on the mountain. Two ACE events this summer resulted in the planting of 1000 new tree seedlings across the ski area. Hazardous trees were removed and carried over to the Alta lumber mill, which is situated next to the Lower Albion Meadows Trail.

Alta’s projected opening date is November 22nd.
