Australia- This past weekend marked the end of an era for Mt. Perisher.
This past weekend, Perisher Resort closed the Mt. Perisher Triple Chair for good. First opened back in 1979, the fixed-grip triple chairlift has serviced Mt. Perisher’s intermediate terrain for the past 44 years. They commemorated its closure by hosting a Retro Weekend, inviting guests to wear their best 70s outfits. Saturday featured a Scavenger Hunt and an appreciation day for Epic passholders. In terms of Sunda Sunday, they handed out cookies, and DJ Bolta performed next to the Triple Chair. The Australian ski resort spun the Mt. Perisher Triple Chair for the final time on September 15th.
The other chairlift that is being replaced by this new lift, the Mt. Perisher Double Chairlift, closed following the 2023 season. Its old chairs were auctioned off on June 9th.
A detachable high-speed six-pack chairlift is replacing these two closed lifts. It will have a ride time of 5.6 minutes, a drastic improvement over the Triple Chair’s 10-minute journey. When it opens, the new chairlift’s top terminal elevation will be the highest lifted point in Australia at 2042 meters (approximately 6700 feet). Buildings will also cover the terminals, protecting them against the wind.
Initial work, including removing the old Mt. Perisher Double Chairlift, conducting earthwork, and installing the mast for the top terminal, was done last off-season. The main construction work will be done during the 2024-25 offseason.
The new Mt. P 6 Seater is expected to open during the 2025 season.
