Believe it or not, back on September 29th, 2005 Fillmore Street in San Francisco was transformed into full blown ski hill thanks to 12,000 cubic feet of snow that was created by pulverizing giant blocks of ice.
The event was thrown by Olympic gold medalist Jonny Moseley, San Francisco’s Norwegian Consulate and Glen Griffin of the now defunct spray-on ski wax company ICER. More than 5000 people showed up to event and SF Police had to shut down four extra city blocks to accommodate the crowds.
It was a wild day the temporary snow melting fast 80° heat and an incident where a snowboarder crashed into two spectators who ended up in the hospital with minor injuries. Then mayor of San Francisco, Gavin Newsom, was in the crowd who commented “a lot of political capital was expended to get this done because obviously there was concern with the immediate neighbors.”
Organizers moved to AT&T Park (currently named Oracle Park) the following two years but for one glorious afternoon San Fransisco was a skiers paradise.
