A side-by-side comparison of the GoPro HD HERO with the HERO9.
A side-by-side comparison of the GoPro HD HERO with the HERO9.

GoPros have come a long way since the GoPro HD HERO was first released. While the HD HERO had a max resolution of 1080p30, the HERO9, which was first announced back in 2020, has a max resolution of 5K30. YouTuber and senior creative director at GoPro Abe Kislevitz took the HERO9 and the original HD HERO out snowboarding to create some eye opening side-by-side footage, well documenting how amazing the GoPro’s development has been.

I do a direct side-by-side comparison of the HERO9 to the HD HERO (aka HERO1) in a plethora of modes to show you how far GoPro has come in the past 11 years. Thank you to Zadia for being my snowboard subject!

The current model GoPro is the HERO12, which offers 5.3K30 for 1.5 hours at full battery. So while the quality isn’t hugely different from the 9 to the 12, you can imagine how much has changed from the first HERO HD to the 12.
