There a bit of a grey area when it comes to the classification of e-bikes vs an e-motorcycles and the legality of using the Forest Service land but Utah has several clear cut policies and laws that dictate what’s considered what, and where they can be used.
Utah Code Section 41-6a-102, made effective on May 1, 2024, states that an “electric assisted bicycle” does not include any vehicle with less than four wheels that “has the ability to attain the speed of 20 miles per hour or greater on motor power alone” or “is equipped with a continuous rated motor power of 750 watts or greater.” The Electric Light Bee SUR-RON X ($4,400) has a top speed of around 46 mph and a rated power of 3,000-6,000 watts. As such, it is NOT considered an “electric assisted bicycle” in state of Utah they are prohibited on trails that allow e-bikes (the lack of pedals, and several other factors, give it away as well).
The following confrontation involving SUR-RON rider named Caden Edwards and an unidentified hiker took place on a mountaintop near the BYU campus in Provo, Utah. The hiker is clearly upset to find an e-motorcycle in US Forest Service land and pointed out Edwards’s use of the vehicle is in fact illegal. Edwards responded to his accusations by calling him a Karen. When disputes descend into name calling, both parties tend to lose.
The hiker eventually had enough of the argument and threatened to call the police to meet Edwards at the trailhead. We can not confirm if authorities were involved.
Listen up folks, laws vary in different jurisdictions but as a general rule of thumb, off-road electric motorcycles are only allowed where gas-powered off-highway vehicles and dirt bikes are allowed.
