Kirkby Ski Slope

“It’s never been skied on and it never will be. The people of Kirkby really have been lumbered with a heap of old rubbish.”

Interesting look back from the BBC archives of the Kirby Ski Slope near Liverpool that was condemned before it ever opened to the public. Built out of garbage, without planning permission, over a water main and on land not belonging to the council it was doomed from the get go. The 150ft artificial ski slope was built back in 1973 and at a cost of £140,000 but was demolished before anyone got to enjoy it. They were many issues with the Kirby Ski Slope, not least of which it was essentially oriented backwards with the bottom running perilously close to the M57 (imagine losing control and ending up on a highway).
