FAIRFAX, Virginia – Plans for an indoor ski resort that was initially proposed for Fairfax, Virginia, back in 2019 have not gone away, with the project currently sitting in the rezoning process.

Alpine-X, the same company that wants to bring indoor skiing to Texas, states that they intend to submit a rezoning package for the Fairfax Peak project late in 2024. According to DC News Now, company CEO John Emery believes construction on the project could begin in 2025, taking about two years to complete.

The project’s planned $500 million project includes both an indoor ski resort and a 300-room hotel, providing those in the Washington, D.C. area with an easy-access nearby option for skiing year-round. The 400,000 square foot complex is set to be built on a portion of the Fairfax County Recycling and Disposal Center.

Our business model is different than traditional resorts in that we’re not doing something exclusive. We’re building something where people live easy to get to, but most importantly, super affordable for the entire community.” – John Emery

The project, which is privately, funded, is expected to bring in around 900,000 visitors a year, with an annual economic impact of at least $100 million.

We’ll be eagerly awaiting new information on this project. With summers getting longer and winters getting shorter, it seems like indoor ski areas might be a pretty big part of the sport in the future. Plus, this could provide a great, easy way to ski and snowboard for those in the D.C. areas.
