The Pacific jet stream is setting up to develop an atmospheric river that could deliver some wild weather across the continental United States. An atmospheric river is a long long, narrow region in the atmosphere that transports water vapor outside of the tropics.

According to NOAA, atmospheric rivers vary greatly in size and strength but the average atmospheric river carries an amount of water vapor roughly equivalent to the average flow of water at the mouth of the Mississippi River. Exceptionally strong atmospheric rivers can transport up to 15 times that amount. When atmospheric rivers make landfall, they often release this water vapor in the form of rain or snow. Direct Weather is predicting the current atmospheric river to last through the end of the month with varying amounts of precipitation in the mountains.
