Black bear caught hanging out on a backyard picnic table

Nobody likes being filmed without giving consent. Yes, it’s legal in plenty of places. yes, it should remain legal in plenty of places. But that doesn’t mean it’s a particularly enjoyable thing.

This guy, for example, is just hanging out, enjoying the beauty of nature on his favorite picnic table when this woman comes up and sticks a camera in his face! It’s completely disrespectful, no doubt about it. Now people on the internet are free to comment about his looks, size, and whatever else. He was just trying to enjoy his day!

I don’t know why we enjoy videos of animals acting like people, but we do, and this guy is certainly acting like a person. I’m willing to enjoy a sandwich and some snacks with Mr. Bear. Maybe some marmalade, perhaps?

Backyard Bear Safety

If there’s a bear in your yard, here are a few steps from BearWise that you can take to ensure safety. First of all, don’t encourage the bear to hang out. Don’t give it food and don’t try to call it over. Instead, make a ton of noise from a window or or safe spot on your porch/deck. Yell, bang some pots, blare music, whatever you need to do to make it clear to the bear that it isn’t welcome. Additionally, keep your dogs and pets inside or away from the bear, and ensure that it has an escape route.

Once the bear has left the yard, do a bit of investigation into what attracted him in the first place. Any sort of food, of course, is the most likely culprit, so have a look around your property. Is there a bird feeders, a dirty grill, fruit, or anything else that might have grabbed its attention? If so, put that stuff away, as the bear is likely to come back, and alert your neighbors so they can do the same.
