To me, the most interesting lost ski resort in the Northeast is Mt. Whittier in West Ossipee, New Hampshire. When you’re driving up to North Conway via Route 16, you see old gondola cabins and lift towers next to a McDonald’s and the Tramway Provisions gift shop. It gives a glimpse of what was a very unique and steep ski resort.

This video from Brian Glaser reveals what riding the gondola was like. The footage, which is from 1967, shows the trip up to the summit of the ski resort. The interesting part about the gondola ride was that it started across the street, then went up to the peak.

The ultimate downfall of Mt. Whittier was caused by a few factors. Beginners and intermediates were intimidated by the ski resort’s steep front face. In addition, they never added snowmaking, which is a necessity for success in New England.
