New Zealand ski resorts have been dealing with an uptick in visitors due to increased demand for outdoor activities, along with the return of international tourists. Because of this, two ski fields have decided to limit the amount of visitors they have for this upcoming ski season.
Ski Area Management reports that Cardrona and Treble Cone will be limiting the number of day tickets sold to the public. While they won’t be modifying the number of season passes and Earlybird multi-day passes that they typically sell, the ski fields will set a cap on their day and multi-day ticket sales. When they reach their maximum daily capacity, they’ll cut off ticket sales. The goal is to reduce the number of skiers and riders on the mountain by 1000 people compared to the 2020-22 seasons.
Laura Hedley, who is the GM of Cardrona and Treble Cone, explained their reasoning behind this decision:
“Over the last few years, New Zealand ski areas have seen increased demand from Kiwis and internationals alike, leading to very busy days on the mountains during peak periods, particularly in July and August. Our guests have told us that over the last couple of years, our experience during those peak times hasn’t been where we want it to be. We know that people don’t enjoy struggling to get a carpark or standing in long lift queues.”
It sounds like they’re heading to a North American lift ticket model as dynamic pricing is being introduced as well. If you buy online, you’ll be able to purchase for a cheaper rate. If you buy it on-site, expect to pay a lot of money, just like we’re seeing in North America.
