As someone who has lost their passport on an international trip, it’s one of the worst things that can happen to you. It’s an even worst scenario when it happens to nearly an entire group of travelers on a school trip.

WMUR reports that forty-two students and four staff members are currently stuck in the U.S. following a ski trip to the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The hotel they were staying at, which was the Kancamagus Lodge, allegedly destroyed 41 of their passports. How and why the hotel destroyed these passports is unclear.

Because of this, their trip got extended by four days, as they traveled to New York City to gather emergency documents in order to return to the U.K. In the meantime, the teachers and students have been able to explore the city.

They are hoping on obtaining the documents today in order to return home tomorrow.

Update 3/1: The group ended up returning to the U.K. on Wednesday.
