There lives a man in Gothic Colorado named billy barr (he likes spelled lowercase) who is known as “The Snow Guardian.”  For the past 40+ years billy has been meticulously gathering snow measurements on his little backcountry property because “It was something to do.” Little did he know that his pet project would provide valuable decades-old detailed accounts of snow levels for researchers interested in the information. A hotel lobby bar in the Crested Butte Mountain Resort base area was recently christened in his honor. Its name, you guessed it…billy barr. Lets hope he gets drinks gratis when he ventures in from his little slice of heaven in Gothic (MORE ON THE BAR BELOW).

Elevation Hotel & Spa:

“We are incredibly excited to announce that our brand new ‘billy barr’ will be open to the public starting tonight! 🍺This new space, named after local environmental researcher and advocate Billy Barr, will serve cocktails, coffee, small bites, and serve as a place for people to come together and celebrate the local Crested Butte community. Since 1970, Barr has been living in a secluded cabin in the ghost town of Gothic, CO, just north of Crested Butte. Barr has been meticulously collecting daily snowpack data and wildlife observations that have helped shape climate science in the Rockies. Cheers to you, Billy! See you tonight for a cocktail.”
