In spite of the mild winter, a second ski resort in New Hampshire has made a comeback this season. After Granite Gorge reopened in January, Tenney Mountain reopened today for the first time since March 2020. According to Tenney, the terrain is currently for advanced skiers only due to the recent rainfall. A new ownership group, Northcountry Development, bought the ski resort last year, with the intention of reopening the ski resort. It had been shuttered since 2020 due to the economic challenges presented by COVID-19.

So far, the new ownership team has spent around $1.5 million to improve Tenney. They’ve added new HKD snowmaking guns and multiple Prinoth snow groomers. In addition, they’ve repaired their lifts to get them up to code. A video that shows the power of their new snowmaking capabilities is below.

The Concord Monitor reports that the new owners have ambitious plans for Tenney. They want to double the size of the current base lodge, move the Witch hat that serves as their ticket window to their summit, grow their skiable acreage, add a skier bridge over the parking lot, build a hotel around Route 3A, and add worker housing. There is also the potential to build over a thousand condominiums.

The ski resort has dealt with various issues since its opening in 1960. Sam Hall, who was the original owner of Tenney, was reluctant to add snowmaking, resulting in him selling the property. Over the following decades, four owners weren’t able to solve Tenney’s flaws, resulting in multiple bankruptcies.

Michael Bouchard bought the property in 2015 and spent millions to make the mountain operational again. During Michael Bouchard’s tenure as Owner, there were numerous soft openings, but they weren’t able to remain open for a full winter, and mostly relied on natural snow. Under this new ownership group, Michael is still operating the mountain.

In spite of my hesitations on this latest reboot due to the past struggles of Tenney, I’m hoping to visit there this or next weekend to check it out. I went snow tubing with my family there back in 2004, which was a fun experience.
