“Skiing is not a cheap activity to do. Coming from a low-income school, my kids don’t ever get that opportunity, very rarely, to go. So, I wanted to share with them, what it is to ski. And then hopefully, sometime down the line, when they get older, that, ‘Hey, I enjoyed that and I want to try it again.'” –P.E. teacher Donavon Hodgson

Big shout out to Washington State elementary school P.E. teacher Donavon Hodgson for organizing a day of free skiing for 5th grade students. KREM reports Hodgson set up a GoFundMe back in November to help raise money to fund this dream field trip. After receiving money from the online fundraiser in addition to a great donation from a friend and discounted rate from Mount Spokane, he was able to bring a busload of 54 5th graders to the mountain Wednesday.

“The kids are excited. We had one bus, we crammed on and they were just talk, talk, talk. So excited so it’s gonna be great. Gonna be a great day.”

The 5th graders were able to get a one hour lesson and ski for free all day thanks to Coach Hodgson’s initiative. Got to love teachers that go above and beyond their job description to enrich the lives of their pupils. Hell yeah Coach!

HERE’S THE GOFUNDME PITCH:

I am the PE teacher at Garfield Elementary. We are a title school with over 85% of our students on free or reduced lunch. Ski the Northwest Rockies offers a ski passport to 5th grader for $20 that allows them to go to 5 mountains in the Spokane area. My goal is to promote skiing to my students and have them take advantage of this great opportunity. Out of of 54 5th graders, 2 of them have been skiing in their life. I want to take all of them for a once in a lifetime opportunity (literally this will probably be the only time they ever go skiing). Please help in supporting us to get these 5th graders to the mountain. Mt. Spokane is the mountain we are working with and they have done a great job keeping the cost low for us. Thank you for your donation ahead of time.
