“We’ve collaborated with Snowsports Wales and Team GB is in favor of the project. It will be the longest in the UK and the objective is to make it the UK Centre of Snowsport Excellence because that’s where Team GB will bring their athletes in the summer months and [for] progressive training.” – Richard Arnold, Project Chief Operating Officer of Rhydycar West.
Right, what’s all this then? Wales Online reports that a huge resort complex is being proposed in the town of Merthyr Tydfil. The complex could feature a large indoor ski slope, water park, spa, multiple hotels and lodges, and indoor/outdoor activity areas.
The United Kingdom tends to have more synthetic ski slopes and indoor ski centers than actual ski areas with snow, but the developers intend to make this one of the top tourist destinations in the UK. The cost for the project is projected to be £300m.
The signature attraction would arguably be the 400-meter long indoor ski center. The indoor ski slope is predicted to be the largest one in the United Kingdom. They are aiming to have it as the UK Centre of Snowsport Excellence so that it could host the UK Ski & Snowboard teams during the summer months. International competitions are possible inside the facility, and a full-sized terrain park could also be a part of it.
The other main attraction would be the indoor waterpark, which aims to be comparable to the best ones in North America and Europe, and could include water slides, a lazy river, and surfing simulators.
The indoor/outdoor activity center could feature zip lines, climbing walls, an aerial rope course, and more. Various hotels would feature hundreds of rooms, and a heritage trail is being considered around the former Cwm Pit mine. The project would create an estimated 1600 jobs during construction, and 500 gigs when it becomes fully operational.
Marvel Limited has completed 80% of the planning process, and they are aiming to submit the proposal to the Merthyr Tydfil council by the end of this month. Click here to learn more about the plans.
