Shames Mountain.
Shames Mountain.

Shames Mountain is a family-friendly ski area in British Columbia, Canada, located just over 21 miles (35 km) west of Terrace, British Columbia. Set in the stunning Shames Valley, the ride to the mountain is hard to comprehend.

The ski area itself features terrain fit for everything from beginners to experts, spread out over 1,600 vertical feet and seeing an average annual snowfall of 480 inches. But Shames really stands out in its ownership. Unlike many other ski areas around the world, the mountain is owned by the local people, operating as the first co-operative model ski area in Canada.

My Mountain Co-op is made up of local individuals, socialites, businesses, and corporations, purchasing the mountain in 2011 to keep the area functioning and operating as a community.

Those who are interested in becoming a member of the co-op or just donating to the organization can do so here.
