Markus Eder triggered an absolutely huge avalanche while filming for Matchstick Productions’ Anywhere From Here.

The clip, which is embedded below, is set to start right before the slide, but I encourage you to watch the full thing. (I know people’s attention spans on the internet are short.)

Check it out:

Matchstick Productions: This past season, seasoned veteran Markus Eder was reminded of an important lesson in backcountry safety while filming for #Anywherefromhere. Let your guard down, and the backcountry can quickly become an unforgiving place.

It is important to remember that no matter your level of experience and expertise, avalanches can happen and mistakes can be made. The key is learning from those mistakes and trying our best not to let them happen again. Backcountry snow safety is not only for you but for those around you as well.

Preparation is key when heading into the backcountry. We are proud to partner with onX Backcountry in bringing you the most powerful backcountry ski mapping tool ever created.

Eder is arguably one of the best skiers in the world, but he let his excitement about skiing a dream line get the better of him.

It’s easy to look at this clip now and say “That was so sick”, but Eder probably feels lucky to be alive. It’s clear now that the snow wasn’t safe, and that he should have pulled the plug before dropping in.

With that said, his line was sick. Very few skiers have the ability to straight-line those pillows at full speed with an avalanche crashing down behind them.

Please stay safe out there, friends.
