Picture the toughest run you’ve ever skied. Whether or not that was on a mid-mountain blue or back bowl expert only run, those moments, when you’re pushing your own boundaries, are generally pretty uncomfortable. Now picture skiing the toughest run you’ve ever skied without being able to see the run, the obstacles along the run, the other skiers, or even your own skis. That’s how 15-year-old Jacob Smith skis, but he’s not working his way down blues or blacks, he’s competing in freeride competitions using only his father’s voice to navigate down the mountain.

Look, it’s pretty clear the reporters with 60 Minutes aren’t the most knowledgable when it comes to skiing, freeride competitions, or ski culture in general, and there is a chance some of the reporter’s questions or reactions will make you cringe a good bit while watching, but this is a pretty incredible story. Huge props to Smith’s siblings, father, and family for supporting him so well and keeping him going, and massive props to Smith for pushing his boundaries and shredding so hard. Hopefully we’ll get the opportunity to see him shred more in the future. I know I’ll be keeping my eyes open!
