Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe is targeting Friday, November 6, for the start of its 2026-27 ski season, potentially becoming the first resort in the Lake Tahoe region to welcome skiers and snowboarders this winter.
The Nevada ski area, located between Reno and Lake Tahoe, hopes to open two weeks ahead of Heavenly and Northstar and nearly three weeks before Palisades Tahoe. The November 6 opening remains dependent on weather and snowmaking conditions.
Mt. Rose began making snow October 12, taking advantage of colder temperatures and its base elevation of 8,260 feet, the highest of any ski resort in the Tahoe region. Snowmaking crews are concentrating on the Lakeview Express chairlift and terrain in Kit Carson Bowl, where they hope to establish enough coverage for opening day.
“At 8,260 feet, elevation gives us a natural advantage when temperatures drop. Combine that with our snowmaking capabilities, running on a full SMI system, including a 5-million-gallon water storage tank, and we’re able to make the most of early-season cold weather to build a solid foundation.” -Mt. Mt. Rose Aims for More Than 1,000 Vertical Feet of Skiing
Rather than opening with a small beginner slope, Mt. Rose wants to provide at least 1,000 vertical feet of groomed intermediate skiing and snowboarding from day one. To accomplish that, the resort is aiming for an average snow depth of 10 to 14 inches on at least one of its signature intermediate runs before opening to the public.
The mountain’s predominantly north and east facing slopes help preserve snow, while its high elevation provides additional opportunities for early-season snowmaking.
“We plan to make as much snow as possible with this latest cold snap,” said Mt. Rose marketing director Mike Pierce.
The resort was among the first Tahoe ski areas to begin snowmaking this fall. Its snowmaking system can provide coverage across approximately 28% of the mountain, according to its official snow report.
Mt. Rose has also invested nearly $2 million in offseason improvements, including upgrades to its snowmaking infrastructure and a new PistenBully grooming machine.
Most Tahoe Ski Resorts Target Late November Openings
Mt. Rose’s November 6 target puts it well ahead of most other Lake Tahoe ski resorts, which are planning to begin operations closer to Thanksgiving.
Here are the current scheduled opening dates for several major Tahoe ski areas:
- Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe: November 6
- Heavenly Mountain Resort: November 20
- Northstar California: November 20
- Palisades Tahoe: November 25
- Sugar Bowl Resort: November 27
- Kirkwood Mountain Resort: December 4
The dates remain subject to weather and mountain conditions. Heavenly, Northstar and Kirkwood confirmed their targets in Vail Resorts’ official opening schedule.
Mt. Rose has developed a reputation for being among Tahoe’s earliest ski resorts to open. Last season, however, unusually warm conditions delayed its start until November 21.
If the mountain can meet its snowmaking goals this week, skiers and snowboarders could be making turns at Mt. Rose on Friday while most of the surrounding region continues preparing for the winter season.
Visitors should check Mt. Rose’s official mountain conditions for confirmation of opening day, available lifts and terrain before heading to the resort.
