Highly intelligent to the point of precocious, Border Collies have long been considered one of the smartest breeds of dogs on the planet but this one in Nevada County, California is being called a real-life Lassie after alerting rescuers to his owner’s location after falling 70-feet in a secluded forest.

The New York Times reports the dogs 53-year-old owner had broken his hip and multiple ribs after taking a nasty fall. He eventually crawled back to his camp, retrieved his phone and called for help which arrived seven hours later.

Nevada County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue group where in the area looking for the injured man when they came across Saul the black Border Collie who bounced up and down, spun around in circles and ran 20 feet ahead of them as if to say…FOLLOW ME!

They followed Saul for around 200 yards and he led them directly to his owner who was lying n a bed of dirt and covered by a camouflage tarp.  The man was taken by helicopter to a hospital with injuries that were not life threatening. After getting released from the hospital the following day he reunited with Saul and spent the rest of the day petting and praising his loyal friend.
