Big Sky Resort (Montana) nearly broke the skiing and snowboarding world when they announced their plans to construct a new tram on Lone Peak earlier this year.

The new tram will be bigger and faster than its predecessor, and Big Sky is wasting no time on getting the project started. Check out the awesome video below of crews exploding a cornice at the top of Lone Peak.

Construction on the new tram started off with a bang. This week, Ski Patrol cleared the cornice on the peak, making way for a Chinook helicopter to fly excavation equipment to the summit.”

Only at Big sky can your job description include blowing up a cornice to make way for a chinook to deliver equipment to build a new tram at 11,167 feet. Even writing that sentence feels badass.

Big Sky aims to have the new tram completed by Winter 2023:

The replacement of the Lone Peak Tram has been long-awaited after its 25 years of operation. The top terminal of the new tram will include an all-glass viewing platform with panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, and down the fall line of Lone Mountain through a glass floor. A completely reimagined scenic experience on the summit of Lone Peak complements the ski access, offering guests a must-do activity during both winter and summer seasons.”

The new tram will break ground summer 2022. Follow along with the construction of the new tram over its projected two-year timeline.
