There has been chatter for a couple of months now of Eaglecrest Ski Area looking to buy a used gondola out of Austria. According to Juneau Empire, the city, which owns the ski area, has officially purchased the lift for $1.33 million dollars, but the main challenge is figuring out how to ship the parts. For perspective, Alaska is obviously remote, but Eaglecrest is located on an island. The ski area is seeking bids from transport companies and is looking to secure $10 million from Goldbelt Inc. to help cover the transportation and installation costs.

The Doppelmayr gondola, which was built in 1989, originally serviced Galsterberg in Austria but is currently being removed. The pulse gondola being purchased is “a 2,430-meter-long ropeway, 15 fire-galvanized towers, 12 cabins with room for 15 people each, and it can transport up to 600 people an hour.” The ride will be seven minutes long and will have a mid-station.  The timeline for its opening is not yet certain, but it’s possible that it could open for the 2022-23 season. It looks like I need to add Eaglecrest to my skiing bucket list. Image Credits: Eaglecrst Ski Area, Juneau Empire
