You might know this atmospheric optical phenomenon as a Sun Dog but in meteorology it’s referred to as a parhelion from the Greek for “beside the sun.” They are caused by the refraction of sunlight by ice crystals in the atmosphere and often produce what’s known as a 22° halo.
