Pirates are still real. Very real.
The sailboat captain in the video pulled out a shotgun to scare off a boat of approaching pirates. He fires the gun multiple times into the air to warn the pirates that he is armed.
The pirates appear to be deterred by the warning shots, and they speed away after trailing the sail boat.
Modern piracy is concentrated in select areas around the globe. The most common attacks happen in the Indian Ocean, and various bodies of water in South East Asia.
The movie, ‘Captain Phillips’ , starring Tom Hanks was inspired by the real-life hijacking of the Maersk Alabama by Somalian Pirates in 2009.
