Interesting new bit of tech from the Swiss Federal Institute of Forest Snow and Landscape Research (WSL). The Hedgehog drone was developed to settle on tree branches. Attached to its protective housing are ‘hooks’ with undersides made of special material that adheres well to the branches. Once it reaches its destination, the propellers are turned off  allowing the drone to collect data silently over a long period of time without consuming much energy. Various measuring devices can be mounted on it, for example to make acoustic recordings or to observe wildlife in the treetops with a camera.
