“Here we see some skiers entering an area that is normally pisted and patrolled, but is not now due to COVID closures.”

Scary situation at Courchevel in France where a group of skiers triggered a massive avalanche between two chairlifts, releasing almost the entire slope. According to Henry’s Avalanche Talk, this area of the resort is usually pisted and patrolled, but is not now due to COVID closures. Glad everyone made it out, hope Courchevel either ropes off or mitigates areas like these. Sketchy.

“Good example of current conditions: very weak layer of facets under fresh snow… unstable on piste and in areas usually consolidated by skier compaction and avalanche control. Not stable now though due to lifts closed and minimal intervention on the part of the ski areas.” –Henry’s Avalanche Talk
