“The bear really viciously started to scratch her and then started to bite into her and the only thing she could do is to grab her laptop and start hitting the bear with it. And that managed to break the bear loose and she ran inside.” –Capt. Patrick Foy of the California Fish and Wildlife Department

Scary news out of Sierra Madre, California where a 19-year old woman was attacked by a black bear after she fell asleep in her backyard. The LA Times reports when she and the bear broke contact, she was able to run inside to safety. The bear’s DNA was collected from the woman’s wounds and will be compared with samples taken from a bear that was trapped in the area the day after Monday’s attack. If the DNA matches, the trapped bear “would be euthanized in the interest of public safety.”

Captain Foy wanted to be clear that the bear had not been provoked:

“They didn’t provoke the animal. They didn’t get between the animal and its cubs. They didn’t attract it inadvertently with the strong odor of food. This person was asleep with a laptop in her lap and was doing nothing that would be argued as inadvertently attracting this bear.”

The woman is recovering from her injuries at home.
