Scary footage out of Switzerland where an avalanche was triggered at a ski resort burying six people. CNN reports the incident happened at the SkiArena resort in Andermatt at approximately 10:50 a.m local time on Thursday.

Four of the six buried skiers were able to free themselves and get to safety. The other two were located by a search team consisting of five avalanche search dogs, three helicopters, about 25 skiers, the Uri ambulance service, the Uri Kanton police and the Andermatt-Sedrun piste rescue.

Two of the six buried had minor injuries and were taken to Altdorf Cantonal Hospital via helicopter.  The resort decided to remain closed the following day.

This is the statement from SkiArena Andermatt-Sedrun:

Earlier today, 6 people were caught by an avalanche on Schneehüenerstock on the slope towards the Oberalp Pass. 4 people were able to free themselves, 2 people with minor injuries were flown to the Altdorf Cantonal Hospital. The rescue teams do not expect other avalanche victims. We deeply regret this event. According to the internal piste security evaluation process, the slope was classified as safe. Why the avalanche has come down is part of the ongoing investigation by the cantonal police. The slope is closed on December 27th.
