A surfer is wishing he’d heeded a warning after losing an arm and a foot in an apparent shark attack off Reunion Island near Madagascar reports SurfingLife.

The surfing blog said the whole incident began when 21 year-old, Laurent Chardard paddled into large surf after failing to properly hear a warning of a 2.5 meter hole in a shark prevention system protecting the surfing area.

Ultimately, a Bull Shark attacked. Chardard’s injuries were so severe, surgeons were forced to amputate his right foot and arm. Many others expressed concern over the hole in the netting but the waves were so good the victim and dozen or so more surfers paddled out and one soul has paid the price.
