“Just Groom It!”

At least that’s the motto Vail is taking on as resort officials are trying to amplify grooming on Vail Mountain by 20% compared to last year reports the Vail Daily. While this might come as unwelcome news to hardcore mogul skiers, the destination skier is reportedly stoked on the increase of manicured pistes that Vail Resorts is offering this year.

In the past, groomers have been able to manicure up to 9,000 acres of terrain a week and now the goal is to increase that number by 2,000 acres.

In the past, it’s been customary for groomers to randomly hit rarely groomed runs and not include their action on the grooming report. Such occasions were pleasant surprises for locals and tourists alike, offering some bold individuals the chance to straight-line something that was normally an egg-carton full of moguls. Now, many of those rare grooming targets are being turned into corduroy more often. In an interview with the Vail Daily, Vail’s senior director of mountain operations Elizabeth Howe said, “We have runs that we would rarely groom and just surprise and delight our guests with, and those we are increasing the frequency on, as well.”

Whether on not local ski-bums like the idea of increased grooming seems to come secondhand to what the typical Vail guest expects on ski vacation. According to Howe, after consulting Vail’s ski school, they found that their guests expect a certain kind of skiing and instruction experience, which they integrated into “different patterns and different grooming schedules.”

To groom or not to groom? That is the question…
